What is a Transaction?
A breast biopsy is a procedure in which a sample of abnormal cells or tumors in the breast is taken and examined in a laboratory. This procedure plays a very important role in diagnosing breast cancer. When a mass or abnormality is detected in the breast, a biopsy helps us understand whether it is benign or cancerous.
How is it done?
In our clinic in Çiğli, Izmir, breast biopsy is performed with our advanced diagnostic systems supported by artificial intelligence. During this procedure, usually using ultrasound, mammography or MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), the suspicious area in the breast is found and a tissue sample is taken from this area. The biopsy is performed under local anesthesia, which means that only the area to be biopsied is numbed, so the patient does not feel pain during the procedure. There are several different methods for breast biopsy:
- Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNA): A sample of fluid or cells is taken from the breast with a small needle.
- Core Biopsy: A slightly larger needle is used to take more samples of breast tissue.
- Surgical Biopsy: All or part of the suspicious tissue is surgically removed.
Once the procedure is complete, the tissue sample is examined in the laboratory and results are usually available within a few days.
What are the Symptoms?
Symptoms that may require a breast biopsy may include
- Mass or Swelling of Breast Tissue: A hard mass or abnormal swelling felt in the breast.
- Nipple discharge: Liquid or bloody discharge from the nipple.
- Skin Changes or Redness: Changes, discoloration or redness of the skin surface of the breast.
- Hardness or irregularity of the breast tissue: Feeling of hardness or irregularity in some parts of the breast tissue.
- Pain or tenderness: Pain or tenderness in the breast.
What are the Treatment Methods?
If cancer is detected as a result of a breast biopsy, the treatment process is tailored to the patient’s condition:
- Surgical Interventions: Surgery can be performed to remove the cancerous tissue. In some cases, some (lumpectomy) or all (mammectomy) of the breast tissue may be removed.
- Drug Therapy: Chemotherapy, hormone therapy or biological drugs that target cancer cells may be used.
- Radiotherapy High-energy radiation therapy is used to destroy cancerous cells.
- Artificial Intelligence Assisted Diagnosis: Biopsy results are analyzed with artificial intelligence-supported systems to help make a fast and accurate diagnosis.
These treatment methods are determined according to the type and stage of breast cancer and your doctor will create the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
